In his second Today’s General Counsel column, Jared Coseglia examines how AI is changing the legal job interview and what candidates and hiring managers need to understand now.

The legal interview used to revolve around three familiar questions: Why are you interested in the role? Why are you qualified? Why are you a good fit?
Today, a fourth question has entered the conversation: How are you using AI in your current job?
That question is already reshaping how legal professionals prepare for interviews and how hiring managers evaluate readiness. Jared notes that in the back half of 2025, more than 65% of candidates interviewing through TruLegal were asked some version of an AI skills question.
This article explains why AI-related interview questions can be complicated for candidates who have not been given formal AI access at work. Many professionals are interested in using AI, but their organizations have not approved tools, rolled out training, or created clear policies.
Jared offers practical ways for candidates to respond when they do not yet have a polished AI story. Instead of pretending to have experience they do not have, candidates can redirect the conversation toward adaptability, change management, workflow improvement, technology curiosity, and business enablement.
The article also gives hiring managers better ways to assess AI readiness without over-indexing on tool access alone. The real question is not always whether someone has used a specific AI platform. It is whether they have the mindset and judgment to apply AI responsibly when the opportunity arrives.
AI is changing what employers look for in legal talent. Adaptability, experimentation, creativity, stakeholder influence, and change management are becoming more important in interviews across legal functions.
For job seekers, the lesson is clear: prepare to talk about AI, even if you are not formally using it yet.
For hiring managers, the challenge is equally clear: evaluate AI readiness without confusing lack of access with lack of potential.
